My name is Calvin Chai, I am currently working in Stamford College PJ as an admin officer. I would like to tell you something about myself.I was born in a single-parent family, my parents divorced since I was a year old. I stayed with my mum till I was 7-years-old, when she went to United States. After that, I stayed with my dad from when I was 10 till 18. Being the only child in family, I was often very selfish. When I was a child, I never shared my toys. When I was in school, I was never a friend to someone who has less than I did. When I left school, I spent most of my time just thinking of how to get rich. I got involved in insurance industry, MLM, direct marketing and everything else that could help me make money. I often felt lonely, empty and that life was meaningless. My friendships with people were shallow, I did not have time for family, and I did not really make money as I driven by selfish desires. Obviously I was not happy at all. Not too long after that, I was invited by someone on the street to join a church service. I was very convinced by the messages from God and the warm friendships in the church. They invited me to study the bible to know more about God and I agreed happily. Throughout the study, they explained to me about the truth of Christianity with many facts logically. Only then I did realize the reason why God created human beings, They helped me to see my selfishness and my sinful characters. They taught me how to change, and that why I needed to change was because Jesus had died for me on the cross; just like if there was a who person died because of your careless mistake, so too will you be broken and not repeat the mistake again. Most of all, they showed me with their lives how to be selfless and love the people around us unconditionally. They cooked for me when I was really poor, they spent hours just teaching and listening to me when I was only a stranger somebody they had known for only 5 days. I was so grateful for what God had done for me that I decided to be baptized to be a Christian and to follow and serve him in his Kingdom. After I became a Christian, I learned to care and think of other people's needs more than my self. For someone who had always felt that children were burden, I learn to serve in Church Sunday school and help take care of the kids. For a person who was self-focused (always read comic & play video game alone), I have the change to counsel and help campus students who facing problems with their studies, financial situation, family lives and personal lives. For a man who only taught how to get rich, I feel privilege to work as volunteer in HOPE Worldwide Kuala Lumpur. We visit many of the poor families to provide them with some food and other daily needs, organize fun time for the orphanages, ask for donations for the Clinic of HOPE. Of course, there are still moments when I will be challenged for making selfish decisions, but I am grateful for the Church is always reminding me and providing the opportunities for me to serve others. I am now joyful, confident and rich in friendships after God had changed me from being selfish to selfless. From, Calvin Chai |
